AKC Community Canine® Class
Advanced level for Canine Good Citizen Graduates
AKC Community Canine (CGCA) is the AKC’s newest level of certification for responsible dog owners and good dogs. It builds on the Canine Good Citizen skills, and dogs must already have earned the Canine Good Citizen title.
The Community Canine Title is comprised of 10 items:
Dog stands, sits or lies down while owner fills out paperwork
Dog sit- or stand-stays as owner enters a doorway
Walks on loose leash outside
Walks on loose leash through crowd outside
Walks on loose leash past distraction dog outside
Sit-stay in small group of people and dogs
Dog allows petting by someone carrying a backpack
Dog walks by food on floor and can “Leave It”
Stay from 20 feet while owner picks up item
Recall from 20 feet with distractions present
Must have an AKC number of one of 3 types (AKC registration number, PAL number, or AKC Canine Partners number). All dogs, including mixed breeds, can get an AKC number. The reason for the AKC number requirement is that this is how they create titles at AKC; they attach the titles to the dog’s number. For more information on getting an AKC number, see: http://images.akc.org/cgc/number.pdf
